Positive Health Effects of Pepper Spray Use
Since its creation and introduction to the public, the media has primarily focused on the negative health effects associated with use of self-defense products like pepper spray. However, despite the overshadowing negative press, pepper spray usage has certainly yielded positive effects on health as well that aren’t often discussed.
The most obvious positive effect on health is the decreased number and severity of injuries to both assailant and victim when physical force was used rather than using self-defense spray products. One study performed by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) found that pepper spray use by police officers has reduced injuries to both police officers and suspects and has resulted in a decrease in complaints about excessive use of force.
Law enforcement officers aren’t the only ones benefiting from the use of pepper spray for self-defense measures, however. Ordinary citizens who carry pepper spray for personal protection are experiencing reduced stress levels and enjoying more restful sleep. Being in constant fear when facing real or perceived dangerous situations raises stress levels considerably in the average person, and without relief can lead to a negative stress reaction that health professionals call distress. Distress usually leads to physical symptoms such as headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, sleep disorders, as well as bring on or worsen certain symptoms or diseases.
Whether you’re a career police officer or a mom on the go, knowing that you stand a chance against an attack because you carry and know how to properly use pepper spray will not only give you peace of mind, but will also improve your physical health.
