Common Sense Fends Off Further Rise in “Stranger Rape” Cases
In recent years, the city of Colorado Springs, Colorado, has seen an average of twelve sexual assaults per month throughout any particular year most that fall in the stranger rape category, which has officials worried.
In response to the rise in stranger rape incidents, the Colorado Springs Police Department has recently issued official guidance on how citizens can avoid such “stranger rape” attacks (those sexual assault attacks where perpetrator and victim do not know one another). These tips fall within the category of common sense, no-brainers especially if you live in a bad part of town.
WALKING. When walking anywhere, for instance to go shopping, to get out for some exercise, or really anywhere at all, try to go during daylight hours. If you must walk after dark, try to stay in well-lit areas. Whenever possible, don’t go alone but operate under the age-old buddy system by going with a friend. And last of all, walk confidently with your head held high and at a brisk pace, remaining constantly aware of your surroundings.
RIDING. Don’t ever accept a ride from a stranger. Decades ago hitchhiking may have been safe for those brave enough to thumb it, but today accepting a ride from a stranger is too just too risky.
DEFENDING. Always have some form of self-defense products on your person. A stun gun, pepper spray, personal alarm, or a combination thereof is inexpensive, easy to use, and effective as can be. Stun guns, pepper sprays and personal alarms all allow you ample time to escape from danger, each providing you from 3-15 minutes to escape. Stun guns are not legal in some states. Some cities and states have restrictions on pepper sprays. Check with your local police department.
