Mace or Pepper Spray? That is the Question
When making the decision about which non-lethal weapon to choose, the difference between Mace and pepper spray is important.
Pepper spray is pretty much what it sounds like. It is derived from a variety of pepper plant which is related to hot chili peppers. When sprayed into the eyes of a would-be assailant, it causes his eyes to slam shut. It irritates the eyes and other mucous membranes severely, causing temporary blindness and respiratory unpleasantness. This translates into an opportunity to leave the area and call for reinforcements.
Mace is a different matter. While pepper spray must be sprayed directly into the eyes of the assailant, Mace can be sprayed anywhere from the shoulders on up. Since it is tear gas the effects are broader reaching and singularly unpleasant. Mucous membranes are affected and uncontrollable coughing makes it so difficult for breathing that regular activities are temporarily suspended. The effects last up to about 30 minutes and are distinctly unpleasant.
The main advantage is that since the target area is greatly enlarged, the odds of effectively disabling the would-be assailant are significantly improved. Just back up a big, raise the container, thumb open the safety lit, and let ‘er rip.
All Mace and pepper spray containers have safety switches on them, making it difficult to fire by accident but easy to spray on purpose. In particular, the Mace cartridge is encased in a holder with a thumb safety feature.
Try them on for size. See what fits your hand and your needs.
