Second Amendment Rights Victorious
In a recent ruling the Supreme Court voted to uphold Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms for self defense. The major ruling affirms what seems to be the view of many Americans: that the common sense view that self protection is a basic right – that everyone has the right to protect one’s own self from criminals and those who intend to do harm to you and your loved ones.
Dissenting Justice John Paul Stevens believes that the majority “would have us believe that over 200 years ago, the Framers made a choice to limit the tools available to elected officials wishing to regulate civilian uses of weapons.”
The question could be viewed as whether or not the Framers planned to grant government officials the right to limit rights of private individuals. In case Justice Stevens has forgotten, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were written not written for power hungry bureaucrats. They were penned for the People – the very ones who fought to throw off oppressive government and are still fighting to keep themselves, their homes, and their country safe for law-abiding citizens.
As has been said many times, when you take away guns from law abiding citizens, the criminals are the only ones who will be left with guns.
