Queensland Officers Issued Taser Stun Guns
In Queensland the Police service has equipped its frontline officers with $14 million in Taser stun guns. According to Police Minister Judy Spence, they have plans to stage Taser purchases and training, beginning with 1,240 stun guns during this fiscal year.
"We will not see the situation of every officer walking around with a Taser on his or her belt," said Ms. Spence.
She told Brisbane reporters that by June 30 of next year the she expects that stun guns, manufactured by Taser International, “will be available in every police district, and 5,800 police will be trained to use them by the end of next year.”
Ms. Spence said, "The Tasers will be given out to each unit, and a unit might be two officers working together, or a single motorbike officer working as a unit alone."
The decision to equip officers follows a year-long trial in the southeast area of the state of Queensland. During the trial Tasers were used 188 times. Incident reports showed that that in 44% of the occasions the mere face of disclosing the non-lethal was sufficient to bring the situation to a close without the need for its use.
As in Canada, each time a TASER is used the event is recorded and reviewed by each police district. Any suspicions of misuse or wrongdoing will be investigated by the police ethical standards command which is overseen by the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC).
