TASER Use Rising in UK
Bloomberg reports that both English and Welsh law enforcement agencies are using non-lethal weapons in ever-increasing numbers. The Home Office review of such weapon usage is being questioned by various human rights groups, such as Amnesty International.
According to third quarter statistics during a 12-month trial, there have been 159 cases of Tasers being drawn, aimed, and trained on a suspect or actually used on a suspect. Based on this and other reports, governing agencies responsible for making Tasers available to all forces in England and Wales will be making their decision.
According to Tony McNulty, Home Office Minister, “Tasers are making a real difference on our streets, not only keeping the public safe but also protecting our police officers.” He added that “Tasers have contributed to resolving incidents without injury where otherwise there would have been a real possibility of someone being seriously injured or killed.”
A spokeswoman for the Home Office says that as of nine months into the UK trial “there have been no reported serious injuries associated with Taser.”
So far, Tasers have been drawn 411 times since the trial began in September of last year. In all, the non-lethal weapons have been discharged a total of 57 times. Nevertheless, Tasers are drawn and used only as a last resort, according to a statement by the Home Office.
