Denver Mayor Explained Secret Facility – Finally
After Rick Sallinger blew the whistle on Denver’s secret plans for ‘Gitmo On The Platte’ Mayor John Hickenlooper’s office provided its reasoning for the holding facility to the media.
City officials launched their community outreach program last Tuesday to explain the function of the temporary arrestee processing center which it had prepared in secret. At the time of the news release the mayor’s office made it clear that the site was under construction but that tours would be available shortly.
Administrators stated that the city is “obligated” to do advance planning and make preparations in case of multiple arrests during the Republican National Convention, even though such widespread need is not anticipated. Nevertheless, given the increased volume of people and organizations that are attending the convention and actually plan to demonstrate in such a way as to get themselves arrested, to skip thoughtful preparation would be sheer folly.
The temporary arrest processing center will be up and running as needed from Sunday, august 24 through Sunday, august 31. Since the number of arrests is likely to increase the city will provide additional manpower in order to limit the wait time and actual processing.
To no one’s surprise, the American Civil Liberties Union launched into their questions about “how prisoners will get access to food and water, bathrooms, telephones, plus medical care, and if there will be a place to meet with attorneys.” The facility is equipped with water, bathrooms, phones and medical staff will be provided.
