Keokuk Officers Now Armed With Taser guns
Police Chief Tom Crew put himself through the entire training course for Taser guns. Although some officers only choose to take the two second hit, he went for the full five seconds.
“I decided to take the full five-second burst so as I sit behind this desk I know exactly what everyone it is deployed on goes through,” Crew said. “I could not fight this. This was a total disruption of my muscular system.”
After officers have had four hours of Taser training and passed the test, they will be equipped with Tasers, hopefully by the end of August.
Crew was hit by the two barbed projectiles: one at the shoulder, the other on his upper hip. He said, “You can feel the electrical pulse immobilizing you but your auditory and visual senses are as clear as can be.” Crew went on to say, “You can hear the pulsing. I tried to put one foot forward but I couldn’t move. My head went back and I just growled.”
Crew said a recent incident involved a man intent upon doing himself lethal harm and he was within range of loaded firearms. When he did not respond to police directives, he was Tased by an officer who had been called in from a nearby township. Hamilton officers have been equipped with Tasers since 2006.
