Stun Guns and Pepper Spray May Be Needed on College Campuses
In a nation where firearms are against the law on college campuses and where possession of non lethal weapons is possible grounds for suspension or expulsion, it leaves vulnerable students, especially coeds, holding the short end of the stick.
On many campuses security personnel is fairly well trained and responsive. However, on many other college campuses there simply is not enough money in the budget to provide protection for the thousands of students in their dorms, in class, and traveling across the grounds.
So what is a student to do? Women, especially, are vulnerable. Parents are increasingly arming their daughters with stun guns, pepper spray, and Mace before sending them off to college.
Many parents are also having heart-to-heart conversations with the administration in institutions of higher learning. Parents want to see their precious children protected and are acutely aware of the security risks inherent in living on campus. Colleges and universities that take their security roles seriously and are making an effort, but still need to step up their safety measures.
Security forces need to be trained in dealing with many different emergency situations. Waiting until a crisis
looms is not the time to begin thinking about possible solutions. If personnel have been trained and know how to react to emergency situations, such as an armed intruder, situations can more likely be contained before damage is done.
