Pepper Spray Legal in Most States
Pepper spray is now, and has been for decades, a staple in the arsenals of people who prefer non lethal weapons for personal protection. Because of its effectiveness, police and other law enforcement agencies, as well as security personnel in a wide variety of settings, carry pepper spray on their utility belts.
It is an effective deterrent against several types of animals, including bears, but there are some legal considerations. Most states allow pepper spray. However, some do not and some specific municipalities do not, either. How do you know where you can carry and where you cannot?
Get in touch with your local police force. Most municipalities have community safety officers who can talk with you and your neighbors about what is legal in your area. They will have specific suggestions about how to improve the safety level in your home and how to keep yourself safer when on the move.
If you are planning a trip, find out the law for the various states you will pass through, as well as the regulations in your destination area. It’s also a good idea to check on regulations for airlines or other public transportation you use, as well as what you can carry in your private vehicle.
