Stun Gun Reports Favorable
Stun gun usage at the level of law enforcement is making it possible for officials to intervene in escalating situations without resorting to lethal force. Results from studies across the nation and around the world are confirming that stun guns are being used to good effect across the board.
Agencies who are adding the non lethal weapon to the utility belts of their officers are doing so thoughtfully. Virtually every entity requires at least the minimum training course recommended by manufacturers for two reasons.
The first reason is to become thoroughly familiar with the weapon. Each variation on the theme takes getting used to for the sake of both comfort and efficiency. As with service weapons in wartime, the user should be familiar enough with them to be effective even in the dark or low light situations. Something as simple as where you carry the stun gun can make a life or death difference.
The second reason is to thoroughly understand and be able to enter the hierarchy of force. Imagine that simply giving a command or instruction is the lowest level and that using a firearm to kill someone is the highest level. Somewhere along the continuum there is usually a point at which non lethal intervention with a stun gun may be able to prevent continuing escalation of a violent situation. It is the responsibility of the duty officer to know the options and use good judgment when making intervention choices. Thinking through the possible scenarios is what will make it possible to intervene appropriately and prevent what could be dire consequences for all involved.
