Pepper Spray Causes a World of Hurt
Pepper spray is one of the more versatile substances for personal self defense invented so far.
The active ingredient is the same molecule that provides the heat in chili peppers: oleoresin capsicum (OC). The scientists call this a lachrymatory agent. What that means in English is that the chemical compound irritates the eyes such that it causes tearing, pain, and can even cause temporary blindness. That’s why it’s so handy for police who are busy trying to control a rioting mob. In fact, there is a new delivery system for pepper spray these days.
In preparation for one of the national political conventions this year, the security-conscious authorities laid in a supply of new-fangled “rocket launchers.” They are designed to lob orbs rather like little paint balls into an unruly crowd. The only difference is that the fragile balls are loaded with a combination of pepper spray and tear gas.
However someone encounters pepper spray, the effect will be uncomfortable for at least half an hour.
