When parents allow their daughters to start dating many do so while holding their breath and sending up prayers for the safe return of their children – and for good reason. The incidence of date rape in the United States, as well as other assaults on females, has been climbing for decades.

To combat the upward spiral many women, both young and old, are choosing to arm themselves. Even teens just entering the dating field are arming themselves “just in case.” Often, though, it is the concerned parents who provide the non lethal weapons like mace pepper spray increasing numbers of teenage girls are carrying.

In a culture which doesn’t respect a woman’s right to say “No” and have her answer respected, the step is the next logical one in a natural progression.

Of course, part of the definition of being a teenager lies in the undeveloped level of caution regarding potentially dangerous situations. On the other hand, the number of predators is continuing to climb and it is small wonder that parents feel the need to arm their daughters – just in case.
