Stun Gun Lands High School Student in the Pokey
A fifteen-year-old girl who claimed her parents gave her a stun gun for protection while walking to the school bus stop made a bit too much noise at lunch time last week.
The Arsenal Tech High School student decided to demonstrate the weapon to her classmates in the cafeteria. What she didn’t count on was catching the attention of two Indianapolis School Police officers who were on duty in the area. They heard the distinctive sound of a firing stun gun and moved in to investigate.
According to Mary Louise Bewley, Indianapolis Public Schools spokesperson, “They turned and discovered that a student had a stun gun and was showing it off to some friends.”
Tammy Manuel, an Arsenal Tech parent, said, “I got one daughter going up here and it’s hard because there have been a lot of fights up here.” Nevertheless, she finds it hard to believe a child would bring such a weapon to school. Parents school-wide hope students will learn a serious lesson from the episode.
The Indianapolis School Police confiscated the weapon, arrested the student and took her to Juvenile Detention. She had already spent some time there in April for shoplifting from a Kmart Store. She was also arrested in 2007 for theft and in 2006 John Marshal School Police arrested her for disorderly conduct and battery following a lunch room brawl.
“We give the credit to the officers who were doing their job and doing it very well and helped take this off campus,” said Bewley.
