Stun Gun Can Be an Equalizer for Female Officers
The stun gun phenomenon has eased at least some of the stress on female law enforcement officials around the world. Especially in situations where the potential exists for women to be overpowered by stronger male suspects, the option of carrying a non lethal weapon on her utility belt is a real boon.
Willows Police Officer Kelly Meek squared off with an intoxicated pedestrian about two o’clock on Christmas morning. She offered Samuel Mokler, aged thirty-two, the option of either being arrested or calling a pal for a ride home.
Apparently Mokler did not appreciate the break Officer Meek was trying to give him. A second officer on the scene joined forces to take him into custody. The situation escalated as they struggled with Mokler and attempted to place him in the patrol car. At that point, he assaulted Meek just before he made a break for it by running north through an adjacent parking lot.
The second officer, also a female, ordered the suspect to stop running. After he ignored her demands she drew her stun gun and fired a round which stopped him in his tracks.
As if he hadn’t created enough problems for himself, Mokler continued struggling with officers and correctional staff while he was being processed at the Glenn County Jail. In the end, charges included resisting arrest by force, battery on a peace officer, and public intoxication. Bail was set at $52,000.
