Pepper Spray for Compliance
Police often use pepper spray, also referred to as OC, in order to encourage bad guys to comply with their requests. It is not uncommon for people to choose to resist arrest and attempt to keep their hands unavailable for hand cuffs.
Police officers recently were dispatched to a call in which gunfire had been reported. The call came in late one night. When officers arrived they encountered Charles Huff. Mr. Huff was asked to take his hands out of his pockets which he refused to do. After this refusal he chose to run.
While running away Mr. Huff decided to throw a 9mm handgun into a driveway. Next, Mr. Huff went inside a nearby house and continued into a bedroom. For some reason he continued to resist the officers and earned charges of carrying a concealed weapon, obstructing official business, and resisting arrest.
The pepper spray came into play when Huff resisted arrest. Apparently, he put his hands behind his back and then proceeded to roll on the floor. The pepper spray was used at this point in order to encourage Mr. Huff to cooperate.
Later, Mr. Huff told the police officers that he was not the one doing the shooting and was walking home. Even with all of his attempts to evade police Charles Huff was taken to jail.
Pepper spray is a great tool for officers working to keep us safe every day. It is versatile and can be used in many situations safely, both for the officer and for the bad guy. Officers never know for sure what they may be getting into. Training and quick thinking go a long way.
