Self Defense for Women; Get out and Learn!
If you have ever checked into a self defense class you are probably aware of the many options available. There are almost as many different types of self defense classes as there are Starbucks Coffee shops across the United States. There are also many programs that are working to empower women who are victims of Domestic Violence. You may need to check out several programs until you find the best one for you.
In Elwood, Indiana they offered free self defense classes for women this January. They have set several objectives including:
- Self defense techniques: specifically strikes, kicks, grabs, and chokeholds
- Safety awareness and community programs
- Escape techniques that are basic
- Laws regarding self defense
These are the types of programs that every community needs and most probably offer through one organization or another. Sometimes the hardest part is just finding the programs that are available in each area. Oftentimes it is possible to find information through the local YMCA, police department, or through various church organizations. Obviously, any battered women’s shelter or similar program should also be able to provide guidance.
Women of all ages can benefit from such classes. The program in Elwood has invited all girls from ages 13 to 85+. They are hoping for a good turnout. If there is an obvious need and a good turn out more classes often become available in communities.
These types of programs are a benefit that is easy to take advantage of. Many times the classes are free or have a very nominal charge. Self defense courses are not always extremely physical, either. With a small amount of research, you can find the right program that fits both your financial and fitness levels.
