Riots Discouraged with Law Enforcement’s Friend, Pepper Spray
Over the last two years there have been some issues with rioting at the Australian Open. Group gatherings such as this sporting event that have a history of violence, rioting, or other such issues are often attended by law enforcement officers ready to bring on the pepper spray!
The Australian Open will have a zero tolerance policy this year. In 2007 there were memorable fighting issues between the Croatian and Serbian fans. In 2008 the problem arose with some Greek fans who did not appreciate the pepper spray that was used to discourage their fighting.
People making bad choices this year could have any number of consequences thrown at them. The result if fighting can include 24 hour ejection, fines, banning from the event, criminal charges, and pepper foam will also be on hand. There will be a larger police presence as well.
Police Superintendent John Cooke said, “People who misbehave should understand there are consequences and it’s most likely they will find themselves outside the arena.” Moe than 1 million people are expected to be in attendance at the Australian Open this year, law enforcement workers will have their work cut out for them. All that can be hoped and wished for is a good event for families to enjoy!
Pepper spray or pepper foam are excellent crowd control options in this type of situation. The resulting reactions that occur after a person has been hit with either pepper spray or foam often slow down crowds. Enthusiasm can wax cold quickly when it becomes obvious that bad behavior is going to get you sprayed!
