Neighborhood Safety and Self Defense go Hand in Hand
Chris Devoe and Rachael Spiewak had more adventure this last December than anyone should have to have. Three men who were heavily armed broke into Mr. Devoe’s apartment. There was no chance for self defense.
The two were assaulted by the three men. Mr. Devoe was struck repeatedly in the head with a shotgun and had his hands ties with a cord. Mrs. Spiewak was also assaulted. The men took off with debit cards and other valuable items.
After the couple was attacked, many other violent crimes took place in their neighborhood. The people have chosen to take control. They have formed neighborhood groups and have requested more police patrols and protection in their neighborhoods.
Many have chosen to arm themselves or take self defense classes. There has been a marked increase in the numbers of both classes offered and the numbers of people attending those classes. Instruction is being offered at local community centers. The people are becoming more aware of one another and looking out for those that share their streets.
No one wants to feel unsafe in their home, their neighborhood, or as they go about their daily lives. By working on ways to defend themselves and their neighborhoods, people are working to protect themselves and their families. Whether they choose self defense classes or pepper spray they are figuring out what works for them.
Hopefully, they will find success as many other neighborhoods have. Simple neighborhood watch programs are becoming popular once more and bringing people together. Neighbors are getting to know one another and are keeping each other safe. Hopefully, victims such as Mr. Devoe and Mrs. Spiewak will be able to find peace and feel safe.
