As the spouse of a law enforcement officer I carry pepper spray. I have been to handgun safety courses as well as many other classes designed for self defense issues. I have worked with my husband as he learned about ground fighting and how to take care of himself. My husband recommends I do something nice and simple to keep myself and our children safe: carry pepper spray.

There are some uncomplicated reasons why pepper spray is a good choice for personal protection. Pepper spray is easy to learn to use. It does not take hours and hours of practice before you feel like pepper spray is a secure choice for safety. You also do not have to sell the farm to buy pepper spray both to practice with and to carry. Word to the wise, practice very carefully or you will be more familiar with how pepper spray really works than you ever really wanted to.

If you feel that you need to carry a little something extra for protection do not wait for a bad experience to spur you into action. Do what you can to keep yourself out of harm’s way. The concerns that come with pepper spray are just those that come with anything used for personal protection. There is a responsibility to use it wisely, keep it out of the wrong hands, and have common sense.
