Grandma and self defense, don’t underestimate her!
There are an increasing number of defense courses being offered across the country. People are finding that they want to be stronger and safer. The reality is that a good self defense class can not only help you to feel more confident but can also help you to get out of a bad situation and maybe even get into better shape along the way.
Grandma and Grandpa are even getting into the craze. Senior citizens all over are learning techniques using their canes to help keep safe. The sad fact is that elderly people are at a disadvantage when it comes to strength, flexibility, speed, and reflexes.
The self defense classes do more than teach senior citizens how to be safe. The practice during class time can function much like an exercise class, helping them to develop and maintain muscle. Many senior citizens have stated that they feel like they could do damage with their cane and are more confident about their self defense.
“Dot the eyes!” instructor Rob Hunter told his students. “That’s our little figure of speech for ‘Poke him in the eye.’ ” Keeping it simple applies to so many things in life and this includes self defense. It is also important to play to your strengths. A person who has a difficult time with balance would need to be cautious about using a cane for defense as opposed to balance.
One important reminder is that any weapon can be taken from you and used against you. It is vitally important to know how to use any weapon you carry and keep it in your possession. If you choose to use a cane or carry pepper spray, be prepared to use it effectively. Self defense is for everyone, even Grandma!
