Did a Stun Gun Cause a Valentine Death?
There is a story that has come out of Los Angeles that kind of has me confused. It is a story about a man dying because of a stun gun, but I think that they have it all wrong. Granted, I’m not an expert, but I do know a few things about stun guns and pepper spray.
Apparently, a man was running naked through the streets of Lakewood, California on Saturday night. When the police showed up and tried to calm the man down, he continued to act belligerent. The police probably overreacted because the man ended up dead after they pepper sprayed him and zapped him with a stun gun. It is sad for that man because he died and it doesn’t look too good for the officers either.
But what I don’t get is that the death is being blamed on the use of a stun gun. Excuse me? What about the pepper spray? They used that in combination with the stun gun which is just way too much in my opinion. If a person is going to be incapacitated with a stun gun and robbed of voluntary movement, then don’t spray them with pepper spray and suffocate them as well. Both weapons are very intense and I don’t think they should be used together.
Some people are beginning to wonder if police should have stun guns because there have been deaths associated with them. I’m sorry, but that is just ridiculous. Stun guns help save the lives of police and their suspects. Every officer has to be shocked by a stun gun in order to be issued one, so each one knows it hurts.
Don’t blame stun guns for the death. Blame the incompetence of the officers. If we take the stun guns away, our peace keepers will be in danger; but if we don’t make sure that our officers are properly trained to use them, our citizens will be in danger.
