Stun Gun Used to Catch a Hit and Run Suspect
After trying to chase down a BMW for suspicious activities associated with a prostitute, a Fresno policeman was hit by a car. The suspect who hit the officer was eventually brought into custody thanks to the use of a stun gun.
Officer Ruiz was riding on his motorcycle, trying to help surround the area where the BMW was thought to be. When he turned a corner, Samuel Velasquez hit Officer Ruiz’s bike nearly head on with his BMW. Ruiz sustained some injuries, including a severe cut on his leg. He was taken to a hospital and it was reported that his condition was stable.
The officers continued to chase the Velasquez and his BMW. The BMW was chased down a dead end street. At the end of the street, Velasquez crashed his car into a concrete wall. He got out of his vehicle and climbed over the wall. He ran to a warehouse and hid armed himself with a metal pipe.
When the police found him holding the pipe, they feared that he would attack them. He had already displayed a lack of concern for the lives of police officers when he fled from the collision that he had had with Officer Ruiz. The officers told Velasquez to drop his weapon but he refused to.
The officers drew their weapons and fired them. Among the guns that were fired, one of the officers fired his stun gun. No bullets hit the suspect, but the stun gun did. The bullets that were fired may have been simple warning shots.
While Velasquez was incapacitated by the stun gun, the officers were able to make an arrest without risk to themselves or others.
