Our Struggling Economy Boosts the Need for Self Defense
Self defense has always been an important part of everyday life. From cave men trying to protect themselves against animals, to indigenous people defending themselves from a warring tribe, to the modern man defending himself and his family from thieving crooks, self defense has always been important. But according to a professor in Indianapolis, it is more important now than ever thanks to our tanking economy.
According to the statistics of the Indianapolis police department, burglaries alone have risen dramatically since 2007. Residential burglaries have risen by eight percent, while non-residential burglaries have risen a shocking seventeen percent.
The rise in burglaries is a sign of what the hard economic times are driving people to. People are becoming so desperate for money that they are turning to crime as a means of support. It isn’t that the people who are turning to crime are inherently bad people; they are just trying to survive.
People are being mugged more often and having small items like cell phones and laptops stolen while they aren’t looking. Because of the rise in crime, learning self defense is more important than before. Even minimal preparation can help dramatically reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of a mugging or theft.
I would recommend getting some pepper spray, a stun gun, or even a Taser. Whether you can afford to get these self defense weapons or not, it would probably be a good idea to take a basic self defense course. The police can’t always be there to save the day, so it is up to us citizens to take responsibility for our own safety.
