A Detention Officer is Arrested for Taser Misuse
There has been a lot of controversy over Taser use lately, especially in Canada. People are upset about Taser use and say that they are unsafe. In reality, it isn’t that Tasers are unsafe, but rather the officers aren’t using them properly. In some cases they use it when it is unnecessary, but they usually don’t get punished for using it wrong. They get a slap on the wrist, and that is about it. That is why when I heard this story it restored my faith in law enforcement a little more.
An officer at a county detention center in South Carolina was arrested because she used her Taser incorrectly. Instead of using her Taser to subdue an unruly inmate, she used it as a punishment. That is not what Tasers are for.
Apparently, an inmate had a broken toilet in her cell and was asking to use a different one. Detention officer Dondierdra Anderson went into the cell to look into the situation. The inmate closed the cell door once Anderson was in, and this didn’t settle too well with Anderson.
When another officer opened the door, Anderson pulled the inmate out of the cell and then used her Taser as a punishment.
That…is illegal.
An investigation ensued and Anderson turned herself over to the authorities. They arrested her and now she faces trial.
Tasers are wonderful alternatives to guns. Many lives have been saved thanks to the use of Taser guns. Crimes have been stopped and criminals caught. But when Tasers are misused or used when unnecessary, it gives the police and Taser a bad reputation. Let’s push for proper punishments for Taser misuse instead of banning them from law enforcement.
