Gas Station Self Defense

Gun control is a very sensitive subject. While I believe that gun possession should remain legal, I have a hard time believing that they should be the first resort to when it comes to self defense. There are plenty of other means for defending yourself. A store clerk at a gas station recently had to defend himself and he nearly killed a man.

A gas station in Columbus, Ohio had some shocking events take place in its store. A man came in with a weapon and started to threaten the clerk. The robber demanded that the clerk give him all of the money in the cash register and safe. While the clerk pretended to bend over to open the safe, he grabbed a gun instead.

The clerk shot the robber in the chest which knocked him down. The crook then got up to flee, but soon fell just outside the doors. The police were called, as well as an ambulance. The man was taken to the hospital just in time and he stayed there in serious condition.

Yes, the robber was stopped and the store didn’t lose any money. But though the man who was shot was a criminal, he could have died. I’m sorry, but I don’t believe that a thief deserves death or even near death. A TASER could have just as easily stopped the man from robbing the store and his life would have been in much less danger.

While self defense is a very important part of life, we must remember that we must be responsible for our actions. We should defend our lives but we should also remember that the people we are defending ourselves from are human too.
