Man Claims to Rape and Nearly Kill a Woman Out of Love and Self Defense
Most people in the world believe that everyone has the right to defend themselves against other people who would attack them. What sickens me though is when people seriously hurt others intentionally and then claim that it was self defense. This case in particular made me shake my head in disappointment.
A man named Jerry Mabry allegedly committed a horrible crime five years ago and has now been found guilty in two trials. He has been fighting the first conviction, but after the judge heard what he had to say, Mabry is headed back to jail. The judge expressed that if it wasn’t against the law, he would have added more time to Mabry’s sentence.
In 2004, Mabry allegedly beat a woman and raped her, then attempted to kill her. She had to spend two weeks in the hospital due to the attack. But when Mabry represented himself in both of his trials, he said that he forced himself on her because he loved her and he hurt her because he was acting in self defense.
A psychiatric evaluation advises that he is a high-risk to himself and society, that he may strike again, and that he needs intensive psychiatric help. I’m not psychiatrist, but I would have to agree with the last part. Anyone who believes that rape is fine if you love the person needs help.
Mabry will be spending the majority of the next 30 years in prison, and I really hope he gets some help in that time. In the mean time, I also hope that the woman he attacked will learn some real self defense so that this sort of thing never happens to her again.
