TASER Used in Winnepeg Disturbance
A recent early morning disturbance in Osborne Village, an area of the city of Winnepeg, resulted in the use of a TASER by police officers to end a dangerous situation. The incident began when two men were creating a disturbance in public and two police officers were called to investigate. The officers were speaking with the men when two different men approached the situation. Those two men began behaving aggressively toward the officers and allegedly began to threaten them. The officers gave the two men orders that were ignored, further escalating the situation between the officers and the two men.
During the confrontation between the officers and the threatening men, the two men who had joined the situation began to assault the two officers. Both of the men, a 19 year old and a 26 year old, allegedly physically assaulted the officers. One of the officers stopped one of the assaulting men with a TASER, subduing the suspect and ending the confrontation. The man who was struck with the jolt was tended to by the paramedics who were called to the scene. The man received medical treatment on the scene but had no injuries and was not taken to the hospital.
After the Tasered man was checked out and found to be uninjured, all four of the men who had been involved in the disturbance and the assault were arrested. The two men who originally caused the disturbance were arrested for being intoxicated and held under the Intoxicated Person Detention Act. The two men who were involved with the assault were arrested as well. One was arrested for resisting an officer and the other man was arrested and charged with two counts of assaulting an officer. Both were taken to the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
