Self Defense Products and Weapons Can Foster a Sense of Security
Self defense is more than just combat techniques but even extremely vigilant people can find themselves in a situation requiring physical force. Many people are uncomfortable defending themselves with nothing but their own physical capacities, which varies from person to person. Self defense products are available to make the task less daunting and are both widely available and generally easy to carry.
The least invasive self defense product available is the personal alarm–small, battery operated devices with a button, switch, or pull-out pin that activates a loud alarm. The noise rating for most personal alarms is between 95 and 130 decibels (about the same noise level as a jackhammer). Personal alarms startle and disorient attackers and also draw the attention of people in the immediate area so that they can intervene or call for help. They are extremely affordable and a good choice for people who fear they will be unable to effectively call for help when necessary.
Pepper spray, Mace spray, or animal repellents are weapons that are regulated in varying degrees in the U.S. (laws vary from state to state). As a weapon, these sprays carry the risk of having them accidentally discharged or somehow turned against the person carrying them. They are also more effective in stopping an attack and require no physical contact with an attacker. These sprays temporarily disable attackers with chemicals that cause discomfort to skin and eyes. This is a good choice for people who wish to avoid physical combat. Sprays are available in different formulas and strengths for specific self defense situations.
Martial arts weapons require specialized training and other self defense products can be less accessible for the general public.
