Stun Gun Subdues Armed Robber in Delaware
Early Friday afternoon, a concerned citizen reported to the police that a suspicious person was looking into vehicles at 20th Street and Baynard Boulevard in Wilmington, Delaware. A second caller reported to police that cars were being broken into in that same area. Police were dispatched to investigate.
The suspect attempted to flee from police but the responding officers used a stun gun to subdue him. Later it was discovered that the suspect was armed.
According to the Wilmington Police Spokesman, the man carried a .22 handgun in the waistband of his pants and had 3 bags of marijuana on his person.
The man was charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, resisting arrest, and possession of marijuana. After providing $2500 bail, the man was released pending trial.
Considering the large amount of marijuana found (it is unknown if the suspect was currently using illegal drugs) and the concealed weapon, a confrontation that escalated to the point of firearm usage would certainly have carried the possibility of multiple injuries and/or fatalities.
The quick use of the stun gun prevented the man from using his concealed firearm to attempt an escape from police thus keeping a dangerous situation from becoming even more hazardous.
Targeted and timely police intervention protected property, by preventing robbery, and people, preventing injuries or fatalities, by using the least amount of force required to do the job.
