Self Defense Classes For Women, Texas Style
Lone Star College in Montgomery, Texas is offering free self defense classes to all women, ages 11 and up. According to statistics offered by the National Center for Victims of Crime, a violent crime takes place every five seconds in this country, and a rape or sexual assault occurs every two minutes. With numbers like that it is essential that all women be able to defend themselves if necessary.
Humane techniques seek to use less aggressive, yet still effective strategies.
Humane Self Defense
In contrast to many self defense programs, this one will focus upon unarmed, non-damaging techniques. The goal is to teach women to protect themselves while causing the least amount of damage to their attackers possible. Evasion, deflection, dodging and restraint techniques as well as the use of pressure points will be demonstrated and practiced.
There are a few key principles to humane self defense:
1. Know yourself and understand your opponent
2. Be completely committed to protecting your own life and doing whatever is necessary to succeed
3. Learn and understand strategies that will help you overcome your attacker
4. Understand the bio-mechanical properties of the body that will allow you to overcome any opponent, even one larger than yourself
5. Learn to use pressure points and vital targets to stop your assailant
With these techniques women will be able to avoid becoming another statistic.
Self Defense on College Campuses
It is clear that violent crimes against women on college campuses are a serious problem. While schools are finally acting to put additional legal measures in place to prosecute the perpetrators of such crimes, it still falls to the women to do their best to defend themselves against attack.
Lone Star College’s decision to welcome defensive skills classes on campus, to make them generally available and to move in a direction that will help protect its students should be applauded.
