Pepper Spray Sales Mount after Teen Murder
Over the weekend the body of a Wenachee, WA high school senior was found on the beach. As police begin their investigation regarding the death of this student, people are heading to the stores to buy an unusual item; pepper spray.
Of the several stores in town that sell weapons and pepper spray, nearly all have noted a significant increase in sales. While there has not been an equivalent increase in the purchase of firearms, people are clearly looking for a way to feel safer while still obeying the law.
Customers cite the recent murder as the incentive behind their purchase. Interest in stun guns has also increased although they are apparently out of stock at this time.
Karate schools in the area have not noticed an increase interest in self defense classes, although none of the schools have offered a new session of women’s self defense courses since the incident occurred.
Pepper Spray for Defense
The response to the murder of the 17 year old high school student is understandable. Indications are that the murderer was someone the student knew and likely trusted. In a small community such as Wenachee, the fear that one’s neighbor could be guilty of such a crime is bound to demand some response.
Pepper spray is an effective tool for self defense when used properly. Small containers can be hung on a key ring for quick access or placed within a purse discretely. Having such a weapon can make the difference in a critical situation.
It is encouraging that locals are not making the choice to arm themselves in a lethal manner, since firearms are just as likely to injure or kill the owner as the attacker. Pepper spray can buy you time in an attack, which lets you get away and is very simple to use.
