Pepper Spray Ends Three Hour Standoff

In San Antonio, police officers prepared themselves by putting on bulletproof vests as they began a wide search for a 19-year-old man who had escaped arrest after police recognized him in a car. After pulling the car over, police found the suspect to be combative and when they tried to arrest him he resisted.

In an attempt to apply handcuffs to the man, police at the scene employed their pepper spray device; however they were only able to apply one handcuff before the suspect ran, only then to turn around and fire a shot at a police officer.

One of the officers then returned the fire, while another held down the suspect’s brother who tried to run from the car.

Charged with two counts of attempted capital murder, the man made his way into a residential area. However it wasn’t until the suspect had made a few demands, such as a soda, $10 and a pair of jeans that he finally surrounded after a three hour standoff and handed himself over to police waiting nearby.

Of course in this situation even though pepper spray had been utilized to disable the suspect in question, it didn’t have the ending results that the officers were hoping for. As a result a situation that should have taken mere minutes was extended into a wide area hunt that lasted three hours.

But that’s not to say these self defense devices are not effective tools to use. It all depends on who it is being used on and the circumstances involved. If someone has been drinking alcohol or has taken drugs the effects of the substance from the pepper spray will vary greatly compared to someone who hasn’t had anything alcoholic to drink or who hasn’t taken any drugs.

Because of this they are able to bypass the effects while continuing on in a dangerous manner. This could certainly have been the case in this situation. Or the officer who employed the device may not have aimed correctly at the suspect, which gave him enough time to make his escape.

Either way, those thinking of buying pepper spray should. After all, as long as you aim it straight for someone’s eyes they are bound to feel the effects rapidly, as the substances works to magic on those who require it.
