Recorded TASER Incidents in New Trial
Police officers in Queensland who carry a TASER device around on duty will now be required to record incidents that demand the utilization of the self defense device which will run as part of a new trial.
The new trial, recently underway, will see ten officers in Toowoomba and Townsville, wearing small cameras which they can simply turn on if they believe the operation of their nonlethal weapon or another type of force is needed during a violent situation.
The employment of these cameras will provide vital footage when it comes to hostile circumstances that could easily blame the utilization of a TASER weapon if no footage was available. The video footage will also present evidence of a scene that shows issues leading up to the escalation.
Officers who employ the use of a camera will be able to present the type of action they decided to follow, in addition to the kind of force model they used in the situation. It helps the officers stay safe, knowing that they are just doing their job, without having to worry about charges being made against them if someone decides the use of a TASER device was employed in an abusive manner.
If effective the TASER weapon camera could possibly be seen more and more during police duty, as additional officers decide to employ them when required.
When it comes to self defense weapons such as these, they are seeing an increasing presence in the media of today’s society. Unfortunately, in many of these cases the presence of such tools is often bad, as many people claim that they were used in situations that didn’t require them or on people who shouldn’t have been subjected to their force.
Because of this, cameras could potentially put an end to the bad press that TASER devices are receiving, leaving more time for the focus to shift on the good that these tools have done for countless other individuals when it comes to their safety.
At the moment though, the ten officers carrying cameras around with them are still undergoing a new trial. Only time will tell whether or not more police forces will actually see cameras put into place for everyone’s peace of mind.
