TASER International Fights Stun Gun Death Claim
TASER International’s reputation is being hurt after a public inquiry report found that the stun gun devices it provides can cause death.
The report which was undertaken by Braidwood Commission released its findings last month after it had followed a two part inquiry into the death of a Polish immigrant in 2007.
However TASER International has asked a judge to annul the findings of the report saying that it’s a slur that needs to be removed. A lawyer for the U.S. based company noted that the report found the harm the self defense devices could potentially cause carries with it a low risk of death. Furthermore, no scientific or medical evidence was provided to support the stun gun death claim.
When it comes to the devices provided by TASER International, it is not just law enforcement who utilizes the tools for safety; it’s also everyday individuals who walk the streets on a daily basis. And yet, as a result of this the judge presiding over the case explained that anyone other than police officials who employ the TASER devices could be seen as assault by causing bodily harm.
Of course when it comes to a person’s safety these devices are extremely handy as it has been designed to stop someone from further victimizing an individual. Because of this there will be a pain factor involved.
TASER International has asked that all findings relating to their self defense devices safety be eliminated from the report as Braidwood failed to warn the company of the conclusions they came to, thus eliminating any chance for the company to argue his conclusions about the stun gun devices.
The investigation into the Braidwood report which was reopened saw TASER International taking part by including 174 articles that proved their weapons were not linked to any deaths. However the commissioner of the report only referred to 60 of these articles in his findings.
This isn’t the first time TASER International has found themselves in court over their self defense devices and its suggestions they cause bodily harm or even death. In 2008, the company successfully requested a judge in Ohio to order autopsy reports on three men after a medical examiner mentioned that TASER devices were the cause of the men’s deaths. It was later found that the men died as a result of police confrontations.
This is the latest attack on the use of stun gun devices and the impact they have on the safety of an individual. However one thing is for sure: TASER International will be facing a tough next few days as the trial gets underway.
