Police Employ Pepper Spray at Teen Dance
What should have been a memorable evening for many teenagers took a turn for the worst after police were called to the scene of three separate fights at a teen dance. Officers were seen employing pepper spray into a crowd of people amounting to around 100 that consisted mainly of teenagers.
Several of the people in the crowd were treated by paramedics at the scene, while one person was taken to a hospital; however police are not sure whether that individual was injured as a result of a fight that took place or the spray released.
Event organizers at the teen dance estimated that roughly around 1,500 teenagers from 13-17-years of age were in attendance at the dance. During the time of the dance, from 7 to 10 p.m., there were no major incidents reported.
Throughout the event nine police officers were assigned to the dance. However it wasn’t until the dance came to an end that three fights broke out in three different areas between the hours of 10 and 10:30 p.m.
Apparently when the first fight began it created momentum for the second and third fight to begin. It wasn’t long though before officers at the event were seen working at bringing the situations under control. In order to achieve this effectively the use of pepper spray was put into action.
While many parents may think the employment of the spray was a bit extreme, it’s also important for them to realize that the officers relied on the assistance of the self defense spray simply because they wanted to protect the teenagers present, making sure they got home safely, as well as maintaining the safety of the police officers as well.
Of course when the pepper spray was utilized it was only sprayed on those fighting, not the teenagers watching the fight. But with a combination of wind, the spray traveled which effected more teenagers than was necessary.
Thankfully though with the officers present at the dance, they were able to stop the fights from escalating any further; and if they use of pepper spray had to be employed for this to happen then the parents of the teenagers at the dance should be grateful that nothing further was able to take place.
