Students Flee Cabrillo College after Pepper Spray Evacuation
Around 40 students and teachers from Cabrillo College Watsonville Center found themselves being evacuated after a teenager took it upon himself to release pepper spray into a bathroom inside a building that consists of classrooms and administration.
According to fire officials, the chemicals released by the spray worked their way down the hallway and into a nearby classroom after the boy opened the door to exit the bathroom.
When the self defense spray’s chemicals came into contact with the students and teachers they began complaining or irritated eyes, noses and throats. The young boy, only a minor behind the incident, explained to firefighters that he had found the spray canister and wasn’t aware of what was inside when he utilized it.
However, while pepper spray is very irritating, it doesn’t produce any long lasting health problems, while the effects of the spray only last for a short period of time. In a bid to make the building safe to re-enter again for the many teachers and students that saw their studies disrupted, firefighters positioned a large fan outside the building to air it out.
How a minor was able to find the spray canister near an educational establishment is what is now being investigated by police. Fortunately though, the device that was employed wasn’t something that proved harmful to those within, but it should play as a vital reminder that even though it may be tempting to employ a newly discovered item, it is best to simply hand it in; after all you never know what you may be projecting once it has been activated.
Of course, when utilized correctly pepper spray is an effective device to employ for a person’s safety. Not only that, but it’s easy to carry around, and one quick burst is often enough to prevent someone from continuing with their harmful intentions.
Furthermore, the self defense spray is small enough to place inside a bag, purse or even coat pocket, which means that wherever you are and whatever you are doing, you can always maintain your protection with the device close at hand for quick employment if needed.
