A Victim’s Killer is Often Someone they Know
In most cases when a man decides to attack a woman they usually know them intimately. A recent study has even found that over 90 percent of the time the woman knows the man in question, who is either her boyfriend, husband, or an ex.
The latest domestic violence case recently involved a 39-year-old man, who after threatening his estranged wife, decided on a path of violence that ultimately ended with his own death.
An Omaha woman was killed in March, while two more followed in July, just as Omaha, in addition to the rest of the United States, is starting its month long events focused on domestic violence awareness.
One way for a woman to increase her safety if she does live in a house where violence is rampart from her partner, is to consider purchasing pepper spray. Easy to utilize and carry, the self defense spray provides the ideal solution to knowing that your safety can easily be maintained with one use.
The mayors of Council Bluffs and Omaha met recently where they declared their support for the victims of domestic violence. Furthermore, both cities held candlelight vigils, where three were lit for four women from Douglas County who died in 2009.
This year marks the 15th annual event, which organizers have explained is not just about helping those who have survived, but is also a time to remember those who have lost their lives.
According to a report released by the Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C., in 2008, over 1,800 women were killed by men in the United States, while 92 percent were killed by someone they knew.
Additionally, twelve times as many women, or 1,564 victims, were killed by a man they knew compared to male strangers, or 130 victims.
It’s important, however, for women to realize that they can speak up about the domestic violence in their lives. While it’s often considered a taboo subject, there is help available to those who seek it.
Not only that, but just by owning a self defense device, such as pepper spray can greatly increase your confidence when it means reclaiming back your life. Even though it won’t be a solution to all the problems involved with domestic violence, it will give you the necessary escape window that many women seek in order to remove themselves from their abusive partners.
