Booze Shop Could Increase Crime and Alcohol Abuse
Residents in one of Hamilton’s poorest areas are fighting against the construction of another booze shop in the area, claiming that it will only bring an increase in crime and alcohol abuse; however the council has explained that it has minimal power to prevent the proposal until the laws are implemented in the new year.
The residents of Enderley are coming together to stop an application being passed to allow a liquor store opening. They have fears that if such a proposal passes then they will see an increase in violence and alcohol abuse which will ultimately leave them to clean up the broken bottles on the streets.
Many of the residents are exclaiming that an additional alcohol shop is the last thing the community is in need off. After hearing about the plans, around 30 shop workers and residents gathered outside shops in order to sign a petition to prevent the licence being issued.
However, the director of the liquor store who was unaware of the opposition posed by the community wants the shop to stay open seven days a week from 9:30 a.m., till 9:30 p.m.
The Hamilton City Council has said that having a liquor shop in the area was not appropriate; however the council’s hand were tied. Until the Government implemented new laws next year which would give council’s more power at determining where alcohol establishments would go, they can’t do anything about the plans.
Residents who have lived in the area for years have said that adding another alcohol shop would only increase their problems. Furthermore, with many unemployed families they will be particularly exposed to the problems of alcohol.
Of course, when there is an increase in crime within an area, that should be a clear indicator for individuals to think of ways in which they can increase their safety. One way that this can be achieved is through owning a stun gun.
Anyone who comes into contact with this self defense device won’t be capable of continuing with their actions once their muscles become incapacitated temporarily, which will provide enough time for someone to contact law enforcement where they can take over with apprehending the individual causing trouble within a community.
