Armed Man Asking for Death is Subdued with Police Stun Gun
A man who has been charged with allegedly battering two people inside a trailer, only to then advance on Chico officers while carrying a large knife in his pocket, was subsequently subdued by a police stun gun and arrested.
Police were initially called to the mobile home to investigate claims that a 38-year-old man had beaten up two people who had been trying to keep him away from allegedly attacking his wife. Once officers arrived at the scene they found their suspect breaking out the windows in a trailer that was located near the one that held his young child and estranged wife.
In an attempt to get away from her abusive husband, she had fled to this trailer along with the child and in an attempt to keep the hostile 38-year-old man out had locked the windows and doors.
As officers approached the man he was seen turning away, which gave them the perfect opportunity to spot the large butcher knife in his back pocket. Ordering him to stop at gunpoint, the man soon turned around and instead began walking towards them. With his hands in the air he shouted for police to kill him.
While he didn’t reach for the butcher knife in his pocket, when he was within 10 feet of the officers, one soon fired his stun gun, which instantly knocked the man to the ground. As he was down officers arrested him where he was taken to a medical center, and after receiving the clear was then transported to a nearby jail.
Investigators found out that their suspect had been involved in an argument with his wife initially prior to the incident. The two individuals who had been beaten up as they attempted to keep the husband from his wife did not require any medical attention.
When it comes to situations that see hostile individuals acting in a dangerous manner, especially when deadly weapons, such as a large butcher knife, are involved, it requires an officer to take the necessary steps in order to decrease the possible risk involved.
As a result of this, the Chico officer believed it was necessary to subdue the man when he was close enough, as it wasn’t clear if their suspect would decide to employ his butcher knife at the officers. So instead of taking that risk, the officer decided to eliminate all the risks involved by incapacitating him.
