Crimes Against Citizens Decreases
In the past three months, Kingston Police have only been required to employ their self defense TASER devices 15 times, according to a report that was recently presented at a police services board.
Officers were forced to point firearms on five occasions, while a TASER weapon was displayed twice. In these two instances, the self defense devices was presented in a bid to stop individuals from harming themselves and others.
Firearms were fired three times in order to kill injured animals.
The report presented at the police services board also showed that the number of crimes made against citizens had decreased from July to September of this year compared to the third quarter in 2009. According to reports in 2009 there were 372 incidents compared to only 328 occurring in 2010.
However, sex offences reported to police made an increase from 17 in 2009 to 29 in 2010. A report from Statistics Canada recently released came to the conclusion that 88 percent of sexual assaults in 2009 had not been reported to police.
But with the help of TASER devices police are seeing a decrease in their use. This, after all, is a good thing, as no one wants to experience the stun that these tools have the ability to produce on those it targets. In most cases, the sight of the non-lethal device is enough to prevent someone from committing an act of crime, making it an effective deterrent when it comes to the weapons employed by officers.
Not only that, but if the use of these tools is required it provides a safer alternative to apprehending a suspect compared to employing a traditional firearm, which has to potential to deliver deadly results for those involved. On the other hand, a stunning device maximizes the safety of the officers and their suspects, which is ultimately what everyone involved wants.
With more police being seen carrying these tools around with them while on duty the number of crime occurring becomes drastically lowered. This means that while law enforcement agencies will be supplied with the devices, their use of the tools won’t be needed as much, therefore, providing safer living environments for many residents concerned about crimes levels in their neighborhoods.
