Lack of Street Lights Raise Safety Fears

Thousands of residents will find miles of roads plunged into darkness this winter across Britain as councils attempt to save money by switching off street lights.

There are around 36 councils who will be turning off lights in the early hours, or dimming them. The Highways Agency is also doing the same on stretches of highways, according to a survey undertaken by Halfords, a company that promotes and sells products related to vehicles, bikes, and outdoor equipment.

A spokesperson from Halfords explained that fatal accidents occur on roads that have poor lighting and as a result people need to be more careful when they find themselves on these streets.

In order for Britain’s 7.5 million street lights to operate it costs £500 million each year.

Not only do motorists need to be extra vigilant on the darken streets, but so do pedestrians who find themselves walking along the dark roads. In order for them to maintain their safety, it is advised that they purchase pepper spray for their safety.
