Police See Rise in Home Burglaries

Police are reporting a rise in home burglaries in the towns of Wareham, Middleborough, and other surrounding neighborhoods.

In Wareham, at least four homes have been burglarized in the past few weeks. Detectives have found that the burglars are careful when it comes to choosing the homes they break into where items such as laptop computers, flat-screen televisions, jewelry and other valuables have been stolen.

In Middleborough, police are seeing home burglaries reported almost daily. Typically, the house crimes are occurring on the weekends when home owners aren’t at home and as a result many home burglars are forcing their way into homes, by kicking in doors and breaking windows.

In 2009, there were 253 reported break-ins of cars, buildings and houses. This year, however, officers believe they will pass that number for 2010, with 23 home break-ins reported in October alone.

Middleborough, which covers 68 square miles, is the second-largest town by land area in Massachusetts, with a population of just over 21,000.

While Middleborough is seeing an increase in house crimes, the number of break-ins in Wareham have decreased in the last few years. In October of this year, the number of break-ins was 35 percent lower compared with the same period in 2008. However, this number is not taking into consideration the recent rise in break-ins, which often happen during the day time.

A police spokesman said that the burglars are not targeting any particular neighborhood, but before burglarizing a home, they first do their research by watching the times that homeowners come and go. As a result, police are urging residents to look out for any suspicious individuals in their neighborhoods.
