Stun Guns to be Employed on Public Transport
Officers patrolling buses and trains are now permitted to employ stun guns while colleagues that don’t wear uniform will also be issued the tools while on duty.
The standard operating rules that are stated under the Government Information Act, refers to officers discretion when it comes to employing the self defense stunning tool. Before being permitted to employ the device general duty officers need to undergo eight hours of training, pass a written test with an 80 percent or more score rating, in addition to firing three test shots.
The use of a stun gun on public transport would for many greatly increase their protection, particularly while walking home in the dark. Not only does the device protect public lives, but it also protects officers and others where the possibility of a violent confrontation is certain. Furthermore, it also defends people from violent animals.
As a non-lethal form of defense, officers are required to shout to their target that they are about to employ the device before it is discharged. This way ample warning will have been given which protects officers from any possible complaints likely to take place otherwise.
The Police Commuter Crime unit was first approved to employ stun guns in May while uniformed officers in the Middle Eastern Organized Crime Squad as well as the anti-bike Strikeforce Raptor were permitted to utilize the self defense devices in July.
However, when it comes to plain clothes officers new rules are under consideration.
Nowadays, it’s important for the police and members of the public to have a form of protection that they can rely on that provides quick and effective results. As a result of this, there are more people turning their attention towards stun guns as the perfect device to own.
Not only that, but when it comes to public transport there are many cases when the public’s safety is put at risk by those who are intent on causing harm and disturbance to their fellow passengers. No one should have to worry about their safety while travelling on a train or bus, but now that officers who patrol these forms of transport, it is hoped that the safety of others will increase with the assistance of the stun guns that they carry.
