TASER Device Use on the Rise
The rise of TASER device use comes after 130 police officers were being trained in order to effectively employ the self defense weapon. On previous occasions only a handful of armed response officers were allowed to carry and subsequently utilize the weapons.
However, while the use of these non-lethal stunning devices may be on the rise, they are ultimately protecting the lives of others as they efficiently aid at tackling a number of incidents, such as people threatening to self harm, hostile dogs, and domestic disputes.
While many believe these tools are not as effective as they claim to be, officers in East Yorkshire are insisting that ever since the device was introduced into the force in 2005, it has become an important device for officers’ use.
Additionally, a TASER device provides officers with the extra option to handle violent and dangerous situations in order to effectively protect the public and ultimately themselves from deadly harm.
In 2010, the use of the self defense tool across the police force was 352, compared to 157 between 2005 and 2009. The use of the TASER devices were required during numerous situations which often saw the device drawn, or placing a red dot on the suspect in question without firing.
While the number 352 is being circulated, the actual number of times that the device itself was fired was on 55 so far in 2010, thus proving that simply drawing the device with the intention to employ if necessary is more powerful at deterring suspects.
