Pepper Spray forces Man from Apartment
Officers had originally attempted to bring the 43-year-old man outside the third-floor apartment after communicating with him with the assistance of a bull horn. However, it was only after police had fired bright lights and employed pepper spray into his window that he surrendered. Hours earlier officers heard him firing a gunshot.
The Allied Special Operations Response Team was initially called to the residence of the 43-year-old man around 7 p.m. Ontario police had transported its mobile command station to the site for help with the situation. At the scene were both the Ontario Hostage Negotiations Team as well as the Bearcat Armored Vehicle employed in tactical deployment.
Police were alerted to the incident after neighbors reported a resident firing a shot out of a window. Mansfield police were able to confirm the incident as a domestic. A woman and her 21-year-old son were able to escape from the residence while three apartment buildings in addition to part of a fourth building were emptied of residents.
The pair had been dating for a year and while the woman explained he had behaved poorly in the past this was in fact the first time that a gun was fired during an argument.
