He explained that according to figures only about a third of people actually feel safe on public transport at night which is essentially a worrying number. As a result, he has recognized that this is a major issue for them to tackle and believes that the five year plan will raise that 37% figure to a much higher number of those happy with public safety at night.
They will need to look at ways in which they can effectively make the public transport system safe so that people will be happy to use the transport system especially when the nights get darker.
One way they have attempted to make the transport system safer is by increasing the police presence and the level of enforcement activity. The police chief commissioner went on to say that a 2.6% increase in the amount of assaults throughout Victoria was the result of an increase in family violence. But, he explained that this could also be due to the raise in the number of domestic violence reported.
While police may be increasing their police activity on public transport, it is not possible for them to be there all the time or when you need them the most.
