Knife and Mugging Crime on the Rise
As well as knife crime, the number of muggings rose where knives were employed to threaten those targeted. Last year’s figures illustrate a rise in the number of rapes, serious youth violence and robbery. On the other hand, the number of gun crime, violent offences and burglary saw a decrease.
Muggings saw a seven percent climb last year, which is the equivalent to about 96 robberies a day, while 647 additional cases of rape were reported. Added to this is the rise in serious youth violence which increased to 3.1 percent and the rise in the number of teenage murders.
However, while these numbers may be shocking, officers say that their efforts to tackle knife crime through plans such as Operation Blunt 2 were essentially paying off.
The Metropolitan Police released data that showed the number of offences decreased last year to just over 800,000 – over 8,000 less reported crimes than the year previously. Furthermore, there were just over 3,000 fewer home burglaries in London while the Met went on to say that that number had dropped by 18 percent in the past 10 years.
Gun crime was also down by 10.4 percent compared with data from 2009 and the number of murders fell to 125, the lowest recorded number since 1978, and seven less than in 2009.
However, while the measures put in place may be doing the job that doesn’t mean members of the public should be any less complacent about their safety. In order to boost their protection they should consider purchasing pepper spray which will increase their defense. This is also the ideal self defense device to own as it is small enough to carry while still being powerful enough to stop anyone from attacking you.
