Officer Threatens to Employ TASER on Shoplifter

One man has been arrested while another is still wanted for questioning after both are alleged to have shoplifted in Shippensburg.

Employees were able to inform police that the two men in question left the store late in the evening carrying numerous items of food without paying.

Police were able to locate one of the men, but when police attempted to arrest the man he resisted which resulted in an officer threatening to employing his TASER device if he didn’t comply with police orders. After arresting the offender he was then taken to Cumberland County Prison.

Even though the self defense weapon wasn’t employed in this situation it does prove how effective it can be at preventing a suspect from resisting a police arrest further. In many cases an officer does not actually employ the tool, but finds that simply drawing it with the intention of using it can provide the effective results required. Because of this police are able to gain control of a situation in a relatively short period of time.

The shoplifter is this situation obviously knows the effect that a TASER device can produce, so instead of resisting police further decided it would be better to comply with their orders instead of making matters worse for himself.

Since the inception of the self defense devices there are countless police departments that have noticed the benefits of equipping their officers with them as an additional device on their belts. Not only are they safe to employ, but the use of them means that officers no longer have to be within proximity of their suspects in order to apprehend them.

As brute force is no longer required, injuries to officers and their suspects are eliminated which means more police can spend longer on streets tackling crime instead of taking time off to recover from injuries sustained through the use of other weapons such as firearms.

While a firearm may not have been required for a situation such as this, without the assistance from a TASER device on hand contact between the officer and the suspect would still be needed in order to apprehend the shoplifter.

However, with the stunning device on hand any form of contact was not required which enabled officers to deal with the situation in the most effective way possible.
