Christians Walk the Streets to Keep Night Owls Safe

Volunteers will soon be hitting the streets of Sheffield in order to keep an eye on drunken behavior and trouble, while also delivering the word of God to those they meet.

Who are they? None other than the Street Pastors. Noticeable in their distinctive blue jackets their aim is to make the church a visible presence of the streets of Sheffield. On Friday nights the pastors can be found handing out water to drinkers, basic first aid to the injured, flip flops to girls having trouble in their heels and blankets to the homeless.

The launch in Sheffield comes after similar initiatives in cities located around the UK. The coordinator of Street Pastors has commented that the trial has so far been well received to those that they meet.

With the necessary training undertaken in drugs and alcohol abuse, listening skills and street safety, the Street Pastors will be teaming up with local churches, Sheffield Council and the police. Communication between them will be done via two-way radios and CCTV cameras.

However, while they will be there to talk to those they meet, if a dangerous situation arises then they will back out and call the police.

Of course, while the knowledge of having volunteers on the streets is one way of ensuring a person’s safety they can’t be there all the time to see that people don’t get into any unnecessary trouble.
